The Royal Pedigrees of U.S. Presidents

A while ago I came across a news story written by Associated Press writer Edith M. Lederer on 10/28/98, titled “Presidential hopefuls share blueblood lines.” The article stated that both presidential candidates for 1996, President Clinton and Bob Dole, were both distant cousins with intertwining pedigrees of royal lineage, going back all the way to King Henry II of England, as well as Presidents William and Benjamin Harrison, according to Burke’s Peerage, a genealogical research firm based in London. Mr. Brookes-Baker, who runs the company, further states that Clinton has more royal lineage than Dole, being able to trace his family tree back to King Robert I of France and every Scottish monarch that ever reigned, as well as Simon de Montford, a statesman under King Henry II, through which Clinton is related to “every ancient aristocratic family in Britain today, including the current British monarchy. On his mother’s side, Clinton is also related to Davy Crockett and President Andrew Jackson. Dole, on the other hand, is merely linked to King Henry III on his mother’s side, through the Talbott and Harrison families of Maryland and Virginia. This, according to Brooks-Baker, is the reason why President Clinton won the election, for he boldly asserts that “The presidential candidate with the greatest number of royal genes has always been the victor, without exception, since George Washington.” So in order to test that theory, we have compiled a list of all the U.S. Presidents (and occasionally their wives or Vice-Presidents) with royal links. This list is by no means comprehensive.

James Madison, 4th President, descended from Kings Henry II and III, and Kings Edward I, II and II of England via the Strother and Taylor families.

Zachary Taylor, 12th President, descended from King Henry II of England, King Henry II of England, and King Edward I of England.

Franklin Pierce, 14th President, descended from Henry I, Beauclerc, King of England.

Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th President, descended from Hugh Capet, King of France.

Grover Cleveland, 22nd and 24th President, descended from Hugh Capet, King of France, King Robert II of France, King Henri I of France, King Philipp I of France, King Louis VI of France, King John of England, King Henry II of England, and King Edward I of England.

William Howard Taft, 27th President, descended from Louis IV of France via the Pecche family.

Calvin Coolidge, 30th President, descended from Charlemagne and Louis IV of France.

Herbert Hoover, 31st U.S. President, descended from King Henry II of England, and Kings Edward I, II and II of England.

Gerald Ford, 38th President, descended from Henry I Beauclerc, King of England.

First ladies Elizabeth ‘Bess’ Virginia Wallace (wife of Harry Truman) and Anne Francis Robbins, later to become Nancy Reagan, were both descended from King Charlemagne, King Pepin of Italy, King Bernard of Italy, Kings Louis I and II of France, and Kings Charles I and II of France.
