The Elixer and the Stone:
Unlocking the Ancient Mysteries of the Occult

by Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh
From two of the co-authors of Holy Blood, Holy Grail, this book traces the history of Hermeticism from its inception in Alexandria, Arabia, and Classical Greece, through the European Renaissance and on to its modern expression in voodoo, psychedelia, and the New Age movement. Hermeticism is analyzed as a manifestation of the Faustian spirit, that part of man which urges him to explore the forbidden realms of intellect that God has deemed unfit for man to pursue - knowledge of good an evil - so that he too might become like God. Baigent and Leigh believe that the Faust character was based upon the Biblical figure of Simon Magus, which they believe to have been a real historical person with a great deal of influence in the annals of the occult. Everything from alchemy, to sex magick, to Rosicrusianism and the Corpus Hermeticum is explored. Nicholas Flamel, Paracelsus, Giordano Bruno, Papus, Manutius, Erasmus, Agrippa, Ficino, and many more of master mages are profiled. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Book of the Law
by Aleister Crowley
Crowley's book of scripture, dictated to him in Cairo between 12-1 p.m. on April 8th, 9th and 10th by his Holy Guardian Angel, Aiwass, "a minister of Hoor-paar-kraat" (Harporcrates.) Three successive chapters attributed, to Nuit, Hadit, and Ra Hoor Khut, three aspects of the same all-encompassing deity. Proclaims the arrival of a new age, The Aeon of Horus, in which each human being is called upon to accomplish his or her True Will without moral impediments. Commands the Earth's elite to take control of and crush the inferior for the good of the Company of Heaven. It was from this that Crowley learned he was the Beast 666. Takes a wrecking ball to all preconceived notions, abolishing concepts of causality, absolutism, objectivity, time and space. The first time I read it I got scared to death and threw it in the Willamette River. You can read it in an hour and you will never be the same. (HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!)

Book of Lies
by Aleister Crowley
A charming book of poems, each one dedicated to a number, 0-91, with commentary explaining the qabbalistic significance. After writing this he was accused by Freemasons of revealing their secrets. Ministry's "Psalm 69" was inspired by the poem of the same number, entitled "The Way to Succeed - And the Way to Suck Eggs!"

  4. For to each individual thing attainment means first and foremost the destruction of the individuality.
  5. The mind must be broken up into a form of insanity before it can be transcended.

Thoth Tarot Deck
by Aleister Crowley
Designed by Crowley and painted beautifully by the aristocratic Lady Frieda Harris, who contacted Crowley and told him that her Holy Guardian angel had instructed her to make a card deck for him. Afterwards, her trippy little paintings were put on display in a gallery show. Get really high and observe their three-dimensional properties. Without question the best tarot deck ever made.

The Key of Solomon the King: Clavicula Salomonis
by R. A. Gilbert, S. L. MacGregor Mathers
A far-fetched but interesting translation of the infamous formulas of King David's prodigal son, by Crowley and Regardie's friend and Golden Dawn contemporary. No one really knows what kind of necromantic ceremonies this wayward Jewish monarch conducted inside his Holy of Holies, the house of the Ark of the Covenant, but this is as good a guess as any. The rituals are useful regardless. The original is on display in the British Museum.

Secret Cipher of the Ufonauts
by T. Allen Greenfield
A fascinating and very thin book hypothesizing that extraterrestrials and Ascended Masters have been sending us messages in a cabalistic code called "Cipher 6" to reveal secrets about the Aeon of Horus. Contains a lot of information about the battle between the "Great White Brotherhood", who collude to enlighten humanity, and the "Black Lodges", who conspire to enslave us.

The Occult Conspiracy
by Michael Howard
Another book about the influence of occult-oriented secret societies in the history of global politics, this time written from a pro-occult, pro-conspiracy perspective. From the Templars, the Masons and the Rosicrucians to the Thule Society and the Black Hand, Michael Howard shows that little of importance has happened in human history without the aid of such secret societies, and civilization would not have progressed without tem. Most interesting, I found, were the subchapters on the Dionysian Artificers, the Roman College of Architects, and the Order of Comacine Masters, all precursors of the Freemasons who originated in the classical world and were obsessed with the sacred geometric aspects of architecture. In this book you will also learn about the spy career of Dr. John Dee, official astrologer to Queen Elizabeth I of England, who had great influence on the colonization of the New World, and the effect that the Rosicrucians had on the European Enlightenment. You値l learn of the political machinations that Calgiostro, Rasputin, and Aleister Crowley were involved in. You値l learn about the secret society that Christopher Columbus belonged to, and the secret society that assassinated archduke Ferdinand, sparking off WWI. You値l learn about the Dragon Order, an occult organization that backed PResident John Adams, and about a neo-pagan colony called Merrymount in New England. where he lived for a time. You値l learn about the Skoptski sect that hired John Wilkes Booth to assassinate Lincoln, and about the sex magick-related Brotherhood of Light which Lincoln himself was involved in. You値l learn of the influence of S.L. Macgregor Mathers on the Jacobite cause, and of the many different occult orders that have either conspired with the Vatican, or fought against them behind the scenes. This book will open up a whole new world of shady dealings and magical conjurations that most people are unaware of, and will bring meaning to the seemingly random events of human history.

The Golden Dawn
by Israel Regardie
A comprehensive encyclopedia of the order's teachings and rituals, written by Crowley's best disciple. Covers qabbalism, numerology, tattwas, divination, astral projection, meditation, geomancy, astrology, invocation, evocation, Enochian Magick - the whole lot. Despite his moral high horse he runs a close second to Crowley in terms of genius.

Necronomicon
Edited by Simon
The latest text purporting to be the true source of Lovecraft's inspiration, and the only one available in all major bookstores. Attributed to one Abdul Alhazred, a.k.a. "The Mad Arab", who supposedly wrote the thing around the eighth century to warn humanity about the return of a demonic horde called "The Ancient Ones." Seems to be based much on Sumerian legends, especially The Epic of Gilgamesh. The author is said to have died while writing it. His last recorded words were "This is the Book of the Servant of the Gods..."

The Occult
by Colin Wilson
An interesting overview of an entirely vast subject. Chapters on lycanthropy, divination, qabbalism, and figures such as Rasputin, Gurdjieff, Regardie, Blavatsky and Crowley, whom Wilson had nothing but utter contempt for. Somewhat annoyingly skeptical.
